NYC takes stand on racial slur

Efforts that began in the beginning of February to ban the N-word in New York City have been successful, according to an article in JET Magazine. On Feb. 28, city council members approved a resolution to ban the N-word with a 49-0 vote.

"People are using it [the word] out of context and denigrating themselves by using the word, disrespecting their history, disrespecting a history of a people and a country and also putting themselves in a negative light that we need to correct," said Councilman Leroy Comrie, sponsor of the bill, in an interview with the Associated Press.

The resolution was put in place to get New Yorkers to voluntarily stop using the word.

"The word can be heard over and over in the streets of New York City," Comrie said. "Young people casually addressing each other using a racial slur that has a painful history intertwined with slavery."

The use of the N-word received media attention last year after comedian and actor Michael Richards used the word several times in response to audience members he said were heckling him during his show.

Noxious New York

The Gotham Gazette Reading NYC Book Club recently met to discuss the environmental justice movement and the book Noxious New York, by Julie Sze. Joining us was Cecil Corbin-Mark, of West Harlem Environmental Action (WE ACT), an established environmental justice group and a subject of the book.

DEFINING ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE?

GOTHAM GAZETTE: What is environmental justice?

CECIL CORBIN-MARK: The environmental justice movement is a social justice movement that has arisen here in the United States and has spread globally. It was born, I believe, out of the environmental movement, out of the anti-toxics movement, and, most importantly, out of the civil rights movement.

From each of those movements, the environmental justice movement has borrowed particular frames or lenses.

Beacon trolley is ready to greet weekend visitors

BEACON - Just in time for the full arrival of spring, the weekend trolley is running up and down Main Street again.

Visitors from New York City arriving by train Saturday and Sunday can hop on the trolley and visit the museums, shops and restaurants along the one-mile stretch of Main Street.

"It's a long walk up from the train," Mayor Clara Lou Gould said of the steep incline.

The antique-looking trolley bus, provided by the Dutchess County LOOP Bus System, will begin its third season Saturday providing transportation on weekends between the Beacon Train Station and East Main Street.

Opening run

A "Ceremonial First Run" was held Friday morning. County Executive William Steinhaus, Gould and representatives of Beacon arts and business groups were on board.

Steinhaus said the trolley will play a role in the ongoing economic rejuvenation of Main Street.
