Jonathan Lethem is a household-name famous for two wonderful novels, Motherless Brooklyn and Fortress of Solitude, both of which are set in Lethem's native Brooklyn—actually, "set" is probably putting it too lightly, as the borough is almost a character itself in these books. For his follow-up to Fortress, Lethem, perhaps wisely, forgets Brooklyn altogether, setting his story in L.A. hipster 'hood Silver Lake—the West Coast equivalent to BK's Williamsburg. You Don't Love Me Yet is half as long as its predecessor, and that relative lightness extends beyond physical heft, as the book moves breezily, without consequence, following the travails of an unnamed indie-rock band from the perspective of their bored, carefree bassist, Lucinda. YDLMY is heavy on sex and humor, but even in this lesser work, Lethem is nothing short of masterful: His lines are unerringly precise, thoughtful and playful.
Bonfante Into Central Park? Make It Free and Open for Access
Yes, the former Bonfante Gardens is a jewel for the community. But, perhaps the City of Gilroy should consider shifting their perspective from "theme park" to just "park". To truly emulate New York's Central Park or San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Gilroy Gardens should be incorporated into our public lands; linked to existing trails now snaking through the Uvas Creek area, open to all, void of entrance fees and rides and free for the roaming. What a pleasure it would be to stroll or bike through the park on a whim, ice skate during the winter, or attend free concerts and plays during a summer series as one would expect in those cities. It's a lot to ask, given the debts and financial obligations involved, as well as the apparent lack of altruism and philanthropy (so recently demonstrated during Gilroy Unified School District land negotiations), which is pervasive in our bottom line economy.

Yakima not in JC Penney's plans
An aggressive expansion plan announced by J.C. Penney doesn't include an immediate return to the Yakima Valley, but the company isn't ruling one out as part of its long-term plans. J.C. Penney plans to add 175 stores and renovate more than 300 stores by 2011, beginning with a new 150,000-square-foot store in New York City, company officials said. About 50 new store openings per year are planned under the expansion, a more aggressive pace for the company. It opened 28 stores in 2006 and 18 stores the year before that. The new locations would be stand-alone stores, a move away from the store's traditional mall anchor model. None of new stores for this year or early next year is planned for Yakima, said company spokesman Tim Lyons in Plano, Texas.
